When someone makes contact with your company for the first time what is the first impression that they get ?

Recently we urgently had to find and use the services of an Electrician, so off we went trying to find as many local tradesmen as possible and start calling them, now the issue we had was not a major one, but something we could not do ourselves, very similar to most home/business breakdowns, so for the tradesman, quick easy job, and very easy money.

We quickly complied a list of around 10 businesses and started calling, What do you think we found, bearing in mind that it was in the middle of the day and midweek, well we found not much, but two things did start to crop up over and over again, firstly an answerphone, with a message similar to, “We are not in right now, leave a message and we will return your call on our return” and secondly the phone is answered and all you get is a ”Hello”  Does this inspire confidence?  Not in a million years.

Did we find someone?  you bet, did they have an answerphone or just say “Hello”  don`t be silly, we found a company that answered the phone in a professional manner, dealt with our needs quickly and had an electrician to us within about 30 minutes, who sorted our problem within about 15 minutes, How much did they charge ?? Lets just say rather a lot, but was it good value ? Yes of course, as our problem was sorted swiftly, and the best thing of all is that we now know who to call next time.

Stock Indentification

As you will probably guess we have many leaflet distributions going on at any one time, so being able to indentify and locate stock quickly and efficiently is of great importance. Our main concern is that most leaflets come in very similar brown boxes, which when arriving at our warehouse all look the same !

Stock needs to be clearly marked, each box needs to have a copy of the contained media attached, a description written on the box or a sticky label with the media description.

Please make sure that the description of the media matches the description and company name on your order form, we have lots of instances where distributions are organised through a company name, and when the leaflets for that particular distribution arrive they have no mention of the booking company on them, this is often the case with franchise type businesses and advertising agencies.

Earth Hour

Earth Hour is just 2 hours away and even if we cant turn our lights off we should all take time to consider the World that we live in and the future of it. As a company, we try to make efforts to reduce our environmental impact, switching off lights, keeping doors shut etc. Our main aim is regarding vehicle movements, we always aim to make vehicle movements as productive as possible, this no only helps with the environment but to also keep Leaflet Distributions cost as low as possible, we always aim to have vehicles fully loaded on the outwards journey, and to make any collections throughout that journey so the vehicles also come back loaded. We all need to make changes, and do that soon.

Costs

Ok, so you have decided to undertake a Leaflet Distribution campaign but have no idea of how much it will cost and where the money is going to go, so here are a few pointers.

1. The design  and production of the artwork for your media, including copy writing, and photography, design etc. This is a vital area, as the success of any campaign depends on the impact that the media makes when it is first seen. Designing your own media is an option that will save you money, but make sure that you have the skills to make it visually good, include all the key components of a great advert and the technical knowledge to produce the file at the correct size and format type for your printer.

2. Print costs, This is fairly simple, with not too many variables, You have print size, quantity, single or both sided print, full colour or perhaps just black on white or a base coloured paper, paper/card weight and type.

3. Distribution, You need to find a company such as Mailbox Nationwide. Leaflet Distributions are priced on a number of factors, quantity, size and weight of media, and the area to be covered. Normally distributions are priced out at a per 1000 rate, with larger quantities attracting better rates.

Remember, the better your media is, the more likely your message will be remembered, company name recognised, or a direct action as a consequence of seeing it.

Advertising

There is one thing in business that must never be overlooked or under estimated, and that’s Advertising, it is the life blood of any business or organisation, potentially without it, you are on a very slippery slope.

I experienced a prime example yesterday evening, we were out for a meal, typical English village, great little pub, that like so many has turned to being a food based business rather than just drinks at the bar type. Now we have been there a number of times, and it is without doubt very good, one of the best in the area, and surprisingly very reasonably priced. So we arrived and to our surprise there were lots of tables free, but we were there quite early so did not take much notice. The evening past us by and we had a super meal, and we then went to pay, at the bar were the Landlord and his wife, great couple very friendly and excellent at their trade, and we got chatting. The conversation went along the lines of how quiet it was in there, so we said, “Where do you advertise?” the landlord hastily replied, “Oh we don’t do much of that, always costs too much”  but where was the real cost, was it the advertising, or was it sat there with a pub virtually empty?

Prices

All of our Leaflet Distribution campaigns are individually priced and the cost depends on a number of factors.

The quantity is the first consideration, we do not have a minimum distribution number, however we do have a minimum costing, this is to cover logistic and distribution costs. Larger distributions will often attract better rates due to the economies of scale.

The size and weight of the material will obviously have a bearing on the cost, one due to the time and cost of actually putting the media through the letter boxes,  secondly the cost of transportation, high quality 135gsm a5 flyers are often packed 5000 to a single standard size box, whereas a small newspaper distribution, typical of political material could be a whole pallet full.

A variable that can come into play is the area that you wish to cover, if you are trying to cover very rural areas, this will obviously take a far greater time than to cover typical UK housing estates and city terraces, so may well affect the final costing.

The term Direct Marketing is a broad reaching term that covers a wide spectrum of marketing mediums.

This advertising medium started in the early 1960`s and was pioneered by some of the very large brands of the time, some promoting financial services that became household names. The basis of the medium is that it puts messages directly into the hands of consumers, and many of the advets will have direct “call-to- action” messages, while this is a great way to try to increase sales in the short term, and a possible way to quantify sales directly from one advertising campaign, there is no way to be able to measure the gains of public awareness, or to be able to measure the increased sales in the future time period.
